EN | Administrator Guide for Configuring the UPPS! Extension Intelligent Navigator (IN)

Overview

Who is this documentation for?

This documentation is intended for system or project administrators responsible for configuring the UPPS! Extension Intelligent Navigator (IN).

Prerequisites

This documentation assumes that you are familiar with the administration area of a Polarion project.

What you will learn

After reading this documentation, you will be able to configure the fields displayed in the WorkItem Preview Window of the Intelligent Navigator for specific projects individually.

Introduction

The Intelligent Navigator enhances navigation efficiency in both the Polarion Live Document Editor and the Work Item Editor (Work Item Form Layout). It provides the following key benefits:

  • Fast navigation between Work Items and
  • Preview linked and cross-referenced Work Items on hover.

An administrator can define the Work Item fields, which are displayed in the Intelligent Navigator Preview Window, per Work Item type.

Configuration

Scope

The Smart Insert can be activated and configured at project level.

The Smart Insert configuration page guides system or project administrators through the corresponding setup.

Step 1: Open the Configuration Page

To access the Intelligent Navigator configuration for a project:

  1. Open the Polarion Administration area for the relevant project.
  2. In the navigation sidebar, go to UPPS! Extensions.
  3. Select Intelligent Navigator from the menu.

Step 2: Configure the Work Item Preview Windows

Overview

Three categories of fields control what information appears in the Preview Window when you hover over a Work Item:

  • Inherent Fields — always shown, in every Work Item preview
  • Typed Fields — shown based on the Work Item type
  • Fallback Fields — shown when no type-specific configuration matches

Each field category supports the following attributes:

  • WorkItem Query
  • Fields
  • Test Steps
  • Fields at End
  • Fiter Priority

See the next chapters for a detailed explanation of each field category and attribute.

Field Categories

Inherent Fields

Inherent fields are displayed in every Work Item preview regardless of any other configuration. They always appear first, before any typed or fallback fields.

These fields cannot be conditionally suppressed. They will always be visible at the top of every WorkItem preview.

Typed Fields

Typed fields are displayed based on the type of the Work Item being hovered. When the cursor rests on a WorkItem whose type matches a configured type-specific rule and satisfies the associated WorkItem query, the fields defined in that rule are displayed.

Use typed field configurations to tailor the preview for specific WorkItem types — for example, showing test-specific fields only for test cases.

Fallback Fields

Fallback fields are displayed when a Work Item does not match any type-specific configuration. If the hovered Work Item has no matching typed rule, the system searches for a fallback configuration with a matching WorkItem query and displays those fields instead.

Fallback configurations ensure that all Work Items show meaningful preview data, even if no type-specific rule applies.

Field Attributes

WorkItem Query

The WorkItem Query field (optional) identifies which WorkItems should display the fields configured in this rule. Leave the field empty to match all Work Items of the applicable type or fallback scope.

The query field accepts any valid WorkItem query that can be built in the Polarion Query Builder.

Fields

The Field Configuration section defines which fields appear in the Work Item preview and in what order. Fields are listed in the order they will be displayed, subject to the filter's type or fallback scope and the Work Item query condition being met.

Test Steps

When enabled, the test step table of the hovered Work Item is displayed in the Work Item preview. The table is only shown if a test step table is configured for that Work Item and is available within your Polarion project.

Fields at End

Displays the fields configured in the "Fields at End" section of the hovered Work Item as a table in the Work Item Preview Window.

Filter Priority

The number on the left side of each filter configuration indicates the order in which filters are evaluated when matching a Work Item. The fields defined in the first matching filter are shown in the Work Item preview. You can change the order of filters using the up and down buttons to move a filter above or below its neighbor.
